About half way through my week on the beautiful island of Sardinia, I got the opportunity to walk around the capital city, Cagliari. The name of the city literally translates as “The Castle” and in a lot of ways it reminded me of an Italian version of Edinburgh. Although different in many ways, there is a castle on the top of a hill as in Edinburgh. More photos will follow of the city itself, but I wanted to share the above image. As is often the case with photography, the final image of the day is often my favourite. Certainly this was the case on this particular day. As you can see by the colour of the sky it wasn’t yet night time, but the sun had disappeared being buildings at this point. I forget which square we were sat having a huge ice cream in, but the street lamp suddenly came on. Glowing orange against the blue of the sky, I couldn’t finish my ice cream without digging out my camera and taking this photograph.
Sardinian Mountain Goat
On my week in Sardinia, Italy, I had the chance to be driven up into the mountains around the southern end of the island. The views from around 1000 metres looking back to the sea were fantastic but we really drove up there to try and find a nature reserve that my uncle knew of where they breed deer. We did find the deer but it was very dark under the cover of the forest trees so photography was extremely limited with my one lens. On the drive back down towards Pula we stopped the car at a Goat farm, the above photograph was taken from the car window. I was very lucky with the wonderful light that came from the right and lit up the animal very nicely. Its a shame we can’t make out both eyes in the image, but all in all I am pleased to be able to share this picture with you.
Colourful Market Stall, Pula, Sardinia
Last week in Sardinia I stayed just outside the small town of Pula. Whenever I am away from home it’s nice to check out the local market and Pula’s Market was very interesting. It was a little small and mainly lots of fresh fruit and veg, so I wasn’t going to take any photographs to be honest, but I did walk past the market stall pictured above a couple of times and thought that there was a photograph there. After the third time I walked past, I stopped myself, pulled out the camera and took a quick grab shot. I felt that the colourful children’s clothing worked well against the lovely blue of the sky. In the past I used to see photos like this and not bother taking them, then spend most of the day remembering how I didn’t take the picture and wishing that I had!
Sunrise behind Palm Trees
The more effort I put into this website and my photography, the more visitors and emails I get from people. If it wasn’t for the numbers of people reading this and looking at my images every day this picture wouldn’t be taken. I had had a very late night the night before and managed to crawl out of bed at 6am to sit by the beach in the cold waiting for the sun to come up over the sea. It was unbelievably brilliant. Until now I always thought to myself, “sunrises are the same as sunsets, only you have to get out of bed really early to capture them”. I now see there is so much more, the warmth from the sun, the colour shift as it pops over the horizon. The above image was taken at the local beach in Pula, Sardinia. I would guess at about half an hour after I first glimpsed the sun popping out of the sea. I obviously took many photos but this one is a little different because of the way I used the palm trees to the left to encroach on the photograph, giving a nice black silhouette against the orange light.
