Has time caught up to Molly Malone? I previously shared this black and white photograph of the Molly Malone Statue. It was sad seeing so many people rubbing the statue. Seeing the clock of O’Neill’s Pub on the other side of Suffolk Street I saw an opportunity for this quite different view. Getting low to the ground and using a zoom lens I focused on Molly’s face. Framing the portrait to make it seem as if she was looking at the clock. Maybe it’s time people stop touching this statue. Dublin City Council seems to agree as this year they are running a pilot scheme to have stewards stationed next to Molly to discourage people from touching her. You can read more about this on the BBC’s article Dublin’s Molly Malone statue to get stewards to stop ‘groping’.
Millennium Bridge across River Liffey Dublin
Central Dublin is split by the River Liffey and there are over 20 bridges that cross it. This was taken looking west along the river from the most famous Ha’penny Bridge. It was a still early evening so I was able to capture some reflections on the calm water. The bridge in the foreground is the Millennium footbridge. In the background is Grattan Bridge. On the far left of the photograph is The Clarence Hotel. There is a green copper dome in front of a construction crane. That’s the top of the Church of the Immaculate Conception – Adam and Eve’s. The tower a with round copper dome in the centre of the skyline is St. Patrick’s Tower. On the far right of the photograph behind the trees and covered in scaffolding is the Four Courts courthouse.
Walking through St Stephen’s Green Dublin
St Stephen’s Green was my favourite park in Dublin. It is a welcome reprieve from the hustle and bustle of central Dublin’s many shops, bars and crowds. We took our lunch down there on a sunny summers day and had a great time. There are a couple of lovely ponds with birds on them. I really like how the bright sunlight is coming through the tree canopy above this long path through the park. It took me a few minutes to realise this but do you notice that everyone is on their phones? I count 23 people in this photograph and more than half of them are on their phones. We realised that this was actually a Pokemon event. Specially, this was Pokemon GO Fest 2024. Where the community of people who play the Pokemon Go mobile phone game, come together to meet up in person to play. It was amazing to see people of all ages and backgrounds playing the game. There were even some groups of people who had dressed up as their favourite characters from the game.
The Custom House Dublin at night
This massive building on the River Liffey is The Custom House. A cupola-topped neoclassical building completed in 1791. I was stood on the south side of the river looking north. Sadly there was about a dozen tents from what I only assume to be people who are experiencing homelessness It was sad to see but I felt quite safe and nobody approached me. It was a bit of a walk from where I was staying on the other side of the city but I knew I needed to recapture this iconic building. My first photograph I shared of Ireland was of The Custom House back in 2006. It was taken from a moving car during the day and this night view 18 years later is definately an improvement.
