Too Big – Logging in Scotland

Too Big - Logging in Scotland

I was staying in the small fishing village of Plockton in the Scottish Highlands for a few days. The main (single track) road in and out of the village had a small logging area where there were piles and piles of logs. Noticing the “too big” notice on a massively thick tree truck I knew there was a photograph there and kept passing it thinking I really should stop and get a picture.

Well, on the last day I did stop and get the photograph captured. It isn’t the most exciting, unique or dynamic photo that you will find on my website but I saw it, it made me smile and I liked it enough to share it and that is all that matters to me.

Rainbow over Plockton, Scotland

Rainbow over Plockton, Scotland

Plockton is the nicest place I have been to in Scotland and this is my favourite photograph from the small fishing village. I stayed in the Plockton Inn for three very enjoyable nights last month and on the last night went for a walk in an attempt to capture a sunset on camera. It had just stopped raining when I was walking down to the front. The sky was extremely dark and just as I started taking photos a rainbow appeared over the water. It lasted about half an hour and became stronger, brighter and fuller by the minute. I had run down to get some foreground detail for this picture. Using the super wide 10mm lens enabled me to frame the rainbow over the Toucan boat. At this point the rainbow was at its brightest point, a minute or two later it had completely disappeared. I might have a hard time convincing some people this wasn’t composed or put together using Photoshop, but take it from me, this is the original photo that I captured.

Inverewe Gardens, Scotland

Inverewe Gardens, Scotland

Inverewe Garden is a botanical garden in the Scottish Highlands, just to the north of Poolewe in Wester Ross. It was started in 1862 by Osgood Mackenzie on the estate surrounding Inverewe House. This was taken in the walled garden, one of the first large areas in the garden that you come to. When I took this I had to wait for people to move out of the way. The gardens are very famous for their more than 2500 species of exotic plants and there were many people walking around and asking the gardeners questions. I wanted this photo to be a colourful garden vista with just the one sole man gardening away.

Urquhart Castle, Loch Ness, Scotland

Urquhart Castle, Loch Ness, Scotland

I had been to Scotland a number of times over the years but never properly explored north of Edinburgh. When the chance came to spend a week in the highlands I jumped at the idea. I had only heard of a couple of places, one of them being Loch Ness. So Loch Ness was on the great list of things I aimed to get a photograph of. My uncle Michael told me not to build my hopes up and he was right. Loch Ness might be the most famous Loch in Scotland, but it is by no means the most photogenic – not by a long shot.

That being said I was there and I was going to get my photograph. I feel sad that I had to pay to go “inside” Urquhart Castle in order to get the picture I wanted of the castle with Loch in the background, but it was all worth it just to be able to say, “Yes, I have been there and here is a photograph showing what it looks like!”
