Dubai Marina Skyscrapers at Dusk

Dubai Marina Skyscrapers at Dusk

When I see a concentration of large buildings, I usually put the wide angle lens on my camera, trying to include as much as I can. Usually leading to massive distortion of the perspective. This was true in my original similar photograph of Dubai Marina. Above I have turned to the right to avoid the crazy distortions and include more of the waterfront.

After spending the last couple of months travelling from Manchester, England to Auckland in New Zealand I am now settling in to take a few weeks break from travel. In the mean time I am excited to show you some more of the places I have been to recently.

Dubai Marina at Dusk

Dubai is the city of skyscrapers, but I hadn’t seen all that many until I was on the metro back from the Palm Jumeirah and looked across the (original) coast line to see a forest of huge buildings. Looking on the map it was Dubai Marina and I knew I had to go there. Above is the first image of the evening I captured. The buildings are a mix of hotels, shopping malls and apartments. It reminded me of Salford Quays on steroids!

In the foreground you can see the artificial canal, carved along a two mile stretch of the shoreline. The majority of these high rise buildings are between 250 and 300 metres with some taller than 400 and one which rises to 516 metres!

Aquaventure Waterpark Dubai

Aquaventure Waterpark Dubai

Taken from the metro station looking over this impressive looking water park that is the largest of its kind in the Middle East and set in 42 acres! From what I could see it looked like a lot of fun and probably a great way to cool off in the 40+ºC temperatures. I was surprised to see so many people in there in the middle of the day. Maybe next time I am in Dubai I will have to explore it.

The Avenues Mural at Atlantis

The Palm Jumeirah gave me a great view of Atlantis The Palm. However if you’re not staying at this luxury hotel resort, the other option is to go to the water park. I didn’t have any intention of doing either of these, so decided to explore what I could of the resort. The Avenues is a small shopping mall of luxury boutiques and expensive looking restaurants. The photograph above shows a mural on one of the ceilings. To be honest it was a bit like how I imagine Disney Land to be. Still I thought the mural was definitely worth recording.
