At the foot of Mount Cook, New Zealand’s highest mountain, is this stone memorial. At 3,754 metres the mountain is a popular challenge with mountaineers. Sadly, it has claimed a surprising number of lives. Rather than attempt to frame a photograph with the top of the mountain peak and this memorial in the same shot, I looked the other way, back down the valley. Behind the mountaineer’s memorial is the Hooker Valley with the Hooker River. This leads into the larger Tasman River and finally the beautiful Lake Pukaki.
