Mitre Peak is the iconic mountain, in the centre of this photograph. Taken between Christmas and New Year on my tour of the South Island. I was fortunate to be there in perfect, early morning conditions, to capture the peak reflected on this stunning fjord. The unexpected thing was the size of the place. Even on a boat, it was often difficult to get a sense of scale. Mitre Peak rises to 1692 metres (just over a mile) from the water. Taken from Freshwater Basin the camera was over four miles from bottom of the peak.
