Champagne Pool

Geothermal activity in the central north island of Island can make for some dramatic photographs. This mainly means a few massive volcanos and steaming pools. Champagne Pools is one of the most picturesque. Part of the Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland it is about 65 metres across with a temperature of 73°C. The orange edge of the pool is caused by deposits of orpiment and stibnite. Far from being champagne the pool’s name comes from the abundant efflux of carbon dioxide that makes the water bubble like champagne.
