Earlier this year I spent a night on the east coast at Castlepoint. After dark I took the camera and tripod to try and capture the stars. In a previous visit I didn’t get a star photography that I thought was good enough to share. Whilst the sky was cloud free. I wasn’t out late enough and didn’t bring a DSLR, just my small Sony compact camera. The light from the lighthouse is very bright compared to the stars. I could have taken two seperate photographs. One longer exposure for the sky and a shorter one for the lighthouse. I didn’t in this case. The light is overexposed but I wanted to capture the stars. The path up to the lighthouse and the small hill behind being visible adds to the effect of this photograph.
Alcatraz Island
In the middle of San Francisco Bay is the famous Alcatraz Island. Over a mile offshore this small island was a federal prison until 1963. It also has a lighthouse. The bay is famous for it’s fog so it was great to see it on such a clear day. Cycling along the bay, I stopped to take a few photographs from the Aquatic Park Pier. I’ve yet to get the ferry over to the island but it’ll be close to the top of the list on my next trip to San Francisco.
South Stack Lighthouse
Off the north west coast of Wales is the island of Anglesey. Off the coast of Anglesey is the much smaller Holy Island. At the far north western point you’ll see this landscape. The South Stack Lighthouse is one of my favourite in Wales, if not the whole of the UK. Built in 1809 you can see why ships needed warning of the dangerous rocks below. This was the second or third time visiting south stack. You can walk right down to the lighthouse but I haven’t done this yet. I’d be good to know if the inside is open and if they let people go to the top of the light.
Castlepoint lighthouse at night
One of the main things about photographing lighthouses is to think about the subject. Photographs taken in the day can be great but lighthouses purpose is to be seen at night. I was trying to capture the light streaming out to the south pacific ocean. It was the first test of my new compact Sony camera which I recently purchased for an up coming trip. Due to the poor weather forecast I didn’t bring my DSLR or big tripod which I regretted as the compact didn’t far so well for star photography. Castlepoint is a great location for star photography on a clear night.
