Mitsubishi Evolution IX at Malcolm Wilson Rally

Mitsubishi Evolution IX at Malcolm Wilson Rally

When I think of car rallies there are two cars I think of, one being the Subaru Impreza and the second being this car picture above. The Mitsubishi Evo is a fantastic rally car and this one sounded amazing. The noise from the engine really went through me as I stood under some trees in the middle of Whinlatter Forest as the car power-slid around the corner just a few feet away from me. This particular Evo IX was driven by Thomas Naughton with Horace Saville as the co-driver. After doing a little research on the British Trial Drivers Association website, the reason this photo is so sharp is probably because the car was being driven slowly around the corner. The car retired from the rally soon after this photograph was captured because of a broken differential.

A second in my new series of rally photographs taken last Saturday morning the above photograph shows my favourite small car. The Ford Fiesta ST is in my opinion a lovely car, and I believe that Malcolm Wilson (the man behind this rally and Colin McRae) agrees with this because he has set up a specific trophy just for the Fiestas. I must have photographed at least a dozen of these tiny but powerful cars.

This was probably my best picture of this type of car, not just because of the sharpness and colourful car graphics, but also for the water spray behind (caused by the puddle he just drove through) and the way the wheels are turning towards the camera as he starts to power slide around the corner. This particular ST was driven by Meilyr Evans with Andrew Edwards as the co-driver.

After a traumatic journey I finally arrived last night at the town of Cockermouth in the northern Lake District. The above photograph was taken this morning at around half past ten. This was the second stage of the Malcolm Wilson Rally at Comb in Whinlatter Forest, just west of Bassenthwaite Lake. To be honest it was completely by chance that I was stood here. There were roughly fifty cars in the rally and this was probably one of the oldest in the wide range of car types. In fact it is a 1974 Ford Escort (mark two) driven by Adrian Hetherington with Gary Nolan as his co-driver.

This probably isn’t my favourite photograph of the day, but it felt right for the car to convert the picture to a black and white image. I have dozens more that need editing, but for now this gives an impression of the rally photographs that you might see online in the coming week. Stay tuned.
