Glass Chess Set

Glass Chess Set

Taken on the same evening that I photographed the Glass Apple, the picture above uses a very different lighting trick. The Glass Chess Set was sat on a light box, eliminating the picture from below. I placed a black piece of card behind the set and using a tripod I made sure I was focusing on the front three pieces. I like the way the pieces further away are blurred but think that the fallen piece shouldn’t have been on it’s side. Also, three or four piece could have looked a lot better than the seven piece photographed here, but with nearly a dozen cameras pointed at this seen at one point, it wasn’t easy to move things around without ruining other people’s images. Still, I think it is an interesting lighting idea and worked really well.

Wainwath Falls, Swaledale, Yorkshire Dales

Wainwath Falls, Swaledale, Yorkshire Dales

Taken last month up the in the Yorkshire Dales the photograph above shows Wainwath Falls, you can find them about 10 yards from the main B6270 road through Swaledale from Nateby to Richmond. I decided to make this image black and white in Photoshop as I think that there are quality of the water is enhanced with the monochrome effect. The river is quite wide at this point along the road and there are steps down from the road to get to the falls. These aren’t the most interesting falls I saw on my weekend up the Yorkshire Dales and County Durham but it is a photograph I wanted to share with you.

Fat Boy Harley Davidson Motorbike

Fat Boy Harley Davidson Motorbike

I think this is the first photograph on my blog that was taken using 35mm traditional film. I stopped using film in about 1998, not so much because I moved straight to digital but that’s another story. This photograph was taken some time between 1995 and 1998. I would have been at a car show, probably Tatton Park with my dad. He takes some amazing photographs of motorbike engines, and I think this style of photograph does have a certain style or quality about it that is appealing . The Fat Boy Harley Davidson bikes were first introduced in 1990. I have no details about the age of this model, but to me (I don’t know anything about motorbikes) it looks like there is two fuel tanks. Maybe reader Mark (my biker friend) could comment on this. It’s just a shame a missed out the logo of the bike in the top left.

Portrait of a Seagull in Blackpool

Portrait of a Seagull in Blackpool

Sometimes it’s just luck. Taking pictures of birds with a compact camera is difficult. I have found that seagulls and pigeons are probably the easiest of bird to photograph as they are very comfortable around man. We were sat on the front at Blackpool having an ice cream and the world’s most friendly Seagull came to talk to me (kind of). He came so close it was almost threatening. I love the look on the birds face and possibly wouldn’t have published this image if it wasn’t for the second seagull in the background. I decided to make the photograph black and white because there wasn’t much colour in the original. I never new seagulls had red eyes until I looked closely at this image. Hope you like this bird as much as I do.
