Otherwise known as the sacred lotus, I came across this pink flower in Bangkok. It was in a small public park, opposite the Grand Palace on the bank of the Chao Phraya River. As you can tell, it was in shade. This really helps make the photograph stand out. Generally speaking the brightest part of an image is what draws the viewers eye. The dark background here helps the flower stand out and gives the flower and more 3D look.
Cutting a Coconut
Here we see a lady is cutting up a coconut, at the waters edge of a canal. I was in the Damnoen Saduak district of Thailand. A couple of hours drive west of Bangkok, it has miles of picturesque canals. The area is famous for its daily, floating markets. Sadly, this has become a busy and popular tourist attraction. As a result, the market has lost much of its authenticity. In many ways, as a tourist myself, I was fueling this. The organised tour I was on took us on a boat trip outside of the market. This was a fantastic way to see how people lived on and around these canals.
Street Cooking on Ko San Road
One of the most crowded photo shoots I have ever been on. It was my last night in Bangkok. There was no way a tripod was going to work for me. After a few evenings of walking around without the camera and seeing how the area came alive at night, I wanted to attempt to capture it. It turned out much better than expect and was well worth the effort.
Tattoo Studio in Bangkok
From my after hours walk around the Khaosan Road area of Bangkok, taken on my last evening in the crazy city. This was one of the first times I have not used a tripod on a night shoot. Instead I relied on high ISO sensitivity as I needed speed as I walked around the busy streets. There are at least half a dozen tattoo studios in this very popular tourist area. In the end, I decided against the Mike Tyson style, tribal face tattoo seen in the movie the Hangover Part II – I am sure that is a great relief to my family!
