Devonport from Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park

Devonport from Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park

I ended up at the Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park almost by accident. After looking on the map of Auckland I decided to visit Rangitoto Island and walk across to Motutapu Island. However when I got down to the harbour front the sky went nearly dark and it rained very heavily for a couple of hours. In New Zealand the weather changes with much great frequency than I have ever experienced (even in the Lake District!). So I decided to take the short and much cheaper boat trip across Waitemata Harbour to explore the area around Devonport. The above photograph is the view from North Head.

Auckland Town Hall

Auckland Town Hall

This historic building on Queen Street is the Town Hall, just adjacent to the nearby Aotea Square in downtown Auckland. It was opened in 1911. I found it quite tricky to photograph as there are a few modern office blocks in the area which I framed the tree on the left in front of to focus attention of the town hall itself.

Parnell Baths

Parnell Baths

Parnell is suburb the city of Auckland and whilst exploring the neighbourhood I came across Parnell Baths at Judges Bay. As you can see by the state of the water it doesn’t look very inviting at this time of the year. It doesn’t open to the public until the summer season gets into full swing at the end of October. Before that it is home to the World Triathlon Champs for a few weeks.

Street Lamps in Auckland Domain

Street Lamps in Auckland Domain

Found outside the main entrance of the Auckland War Memorial Museum in the Domain these street lamps probably date back to 1929 when the museum was built. They remind me of some of the traditional (perhaps a little old fashioned) looking lamps that you may see walking around London or Edinburgh. It is one of many examples of the colonial influences I have seen here in Auckland.
