Stupa at Preah Khan Temple

Stupa at Preah Khan Temple

“I will meet you on the other side in about an hour” my tuk-tuk driver said in broken English as I walked through the entrance of this temple in Cambodia. Having no idea how big it was and not seeing anybody else to ask I started wondering through the ruins. Coming across a “guide/security guard” he started to walk along with me and one of the things he pointed out to me was this Stupa. When you stand in this point the hole in the wall makes it look like the flame of a candle.

Carved Stone Bar Window at Angkor Wat

Carved Stone Bar Window at Angkor Wat

Hundreds of “windows” like this can be seen throughout the Angkor  Archaelogical Park, in many of the temples and in various states of repair. The above angled view was captured at Angkor Wat and (as the most famous temple) it has been repaired the most, you will notice that the third from the left column has been completely replaced where others appear much older.

There was also a difference in colour of the stone, but I liked the pattern more and thought it would make a better final photograph converted to black and white, focusing the eye on the texture of the stone bars.

Crowds of Tourists at Angkor Wat for Sunrise

Crowds of Tourists at Angkor Wat for Sunrise

Taken at 6:15am I was leaving for breakfast, along with about half the crowd who had gathered to watch the sun rising behind the Angkor Wat Temple. Before I heading back to find my driver I turned back to see the warm sunlight hitting the tourists. Many of them are still taking photographs, I particularly like the woman in the foreground holding up her iPad to capture the view!

Breakfast Cafe at Angkor Archaeological Park

Breakfast Cafe at Angkor Archaeological Park

According to my guide (Tuk-tuk driver) the authorities have a ban on development and commercial activity within the Angkor Archaeological Park. This being Cambodia it seems as though this rule is fairly flexible, as there are dozens of these small noodle and snack shops around the major attractions. Pictured above is where I had breakfast one morning (banana pancake with honey) and after walking back towards the temple nearby I turned around to see this view. The way that the light streamed through the trees was magical and I knew I had to record it, to show a different side of life in the Angkor Archaeological Park.
