This is my favourite shot I took in my short time in London this year. It was great to see the Palace of Westminster and Big Ben without scaffolding. The restoration has made the building look amazing. I wasn’t expecting the bright green lights under Westminster Bridge. It takes something away from the incredible and iconic architecture behind it. Maybe the lights could be turned down? When I captured this photograph it was a little later in the evening than I had hoped to be there, so dusk was almost over. Still a work in progress photograph and another where I wonder if it might look better at dawn rather than dusk.
Big Ben from bridge arch
This photograph was a test and I’m sharing it as an example of a work in progress. Bridge Arch is literally marked on Google Maps. It is just south of Westminster Bridge which you can see on the right of the photograph creating a great leading line towards Big Ben. I love the composition and framing with the arch above. It’s work in progress as I want to capture this at dawn or dusk. Probably both. There’s two problems with this location that don’t come across in this image. During the day you literally have to join a queue to take this photograph. Most people are getting their photo taken with this in the background. It’s why you can’t see the wall at the bottom of the shot – there were people there. The second thing that doesn’t come across is the smell. I’ve never been anywhere that smells so strongly of urine. And it was worse at night for some reason. It was so bad I didn’t want to get my tripod out. I wonder if it smells less in winter?
Westminster Bridge and Big Ben
Probably the busiest part of London for tourists but worth it for views like this. In the foreground is the waters of the River Thames. The bridge is Westminster Bridge. On the right is a sightseeing cruise boat at Westminster Pier. Towering over the Westminster bridge is the Palace of Westminster, home to the UK parliament. The focal point is the iconic clock tower officially called the Great Clock of Westminster but we know it as Big Ben. After failing at this photograph on my last visit to London in 2019, I was determined to capture it now. In 2019 Big Ben was covered in scaffolding as part of the 2017-2021 restoration. The sun being in the wrong place wasn’t going to stop me capturing this shot. Next time I’m in London it’ll be number one on my dawn photograph list.
Evan Walker Bridge over Yarra River
The Southbank Pedestrian Bridge is officially called the Evan Walker Bridge. It’s a footbridge over the Yarra River in central Melbourne. Linking Flinders Street Station to the Southbank. This photograph was taken a few hundred metres to the east on Flinders Walk. In the foreground is the iconic Princes Bridge (or at least small parts of it) that frame the photograph. Whilst the day was far from sunny, it was a warm summers day. Hence the number of people cruising up and down the Yarra River on small boats. In the background you can see some of the skyscrapers of Melbourne including the Thales building and new construction going on.
