Port of Liverpool Building

A large three domed building featuring many windows, highlighting its grand scale.

The Port of Liverpool Building is a huge office building completed in 1907. It is designed in the Edwardian Baroque style by Sir Arnold Thornely and F.H. Hobbs. Originally it was the headquarters of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board. It’s one of the largest and most iconic buildings around the Pier Head, a riverside location in the city centre. This photograph was taken in 2018 from George Parade looking across the Liverpool Canal link.

Sheikh Zayed Road Dubai

A cityscape seen from the observation deck of a tall building featuring huge skyscrapers and a 12 lane highway in the foreground

Taken from the amazing Museum of the Future as you can see from the curve on the far right of the photograph. This is the view looking north across Sheikh Zayed Road, a 12 lane highway that runs through the centre of Dubai. Stood here I wondered how I would get to the other side of the highway and if I would have to pay for a taxi. Thankfully there was a pedestrian underpass that took me to the other side to capture my main photograph of the Museum of the Future. I’m not going to list the names of all of the many skyscrapers here but the curved building on the left that goes out of frame due to its height is the Blue Tower Building. It has a McDonald’s on the ground floor.

Institut de France

A large domed building with a boat moored up on the river and a bridge crossing the river.

Taking a cruise along the River Seine is one of my favourite ways to see the architecture of the city. It is hard to know where to point the camera. Heading back towards the Eiffel Tower I took this photograph of the Institut de France. This is a prestigious French learned society that oversees five academies focused on arts, sciences and humanities. Founded in 1795, it is situated on the Quai de Conti in Paris’s 6th arrondissement, directly across the Seine from the Louvre museum. The bridge on the left of the photograph is the Pont des Arts footbridge.

Antigua boat sheds Christchurch

Several colourful kayaks lined up on a dock adjacent to a building, creating a picturesque riverside view.

This photograph was taken from the Antigua Street Bridge. Rows of colourful kayaks out on the deck in front of the Antigua Boat Sheds make for some great contrast. Firstly the bright yellow, blue, green and red plastic kayaks contrast with the green and white stripes of the boat sheds. Secondly the Antigua boat sheds have been used since 1882 compared to the much more modern plastic kayaks. Traditionally flat-bottomed wooden boats were used. They still are to take tourist trips punting on the Avon River.
