Vintage Red Bike

Vintage Red Bike

Bikes have been an interest of mine for as long as I can remember and since using a camera I have always pointed my lens at them. This old push bike was found on a narrow back street in Italy. The sun was shining at just the right angle to give a great texture detail to the wall behind the bike and to light up the front wheel of the bike.

These iconic scooters have interested me ever since I stumbled across a little red Vespa in Barcelona. It is one of my favourite photos and one that I keep on the wall of my office. Walking down a small back street I came across this gift shop that seemed full of Vespa merchandise. I was tempted to buy a bag, or at least a fridge magnet, but I resisted the temptation. This photograph is enough of a record for me.

Vespa Scooter Handlebars

Taken at my favourite time of day, dusk, the light seems just perfect in my opinion. The image has a dark feel to it with a tone of street lighting, but the bike’s mirrors and chrome elements reflect the slight blue sky above. This scooter has clearly been used for years, the left mirror has two cracks in it and there are large scuff marks on the area below the handlebars. If inanimate objects could talk I am sure this Vespa would have a few stories to tell.

Regular readers will know my love of photographing scooters and bikes. I have little interest in riding motor powered bikes, but have always enjoyed capturing pictures of them. This was taken in the old part of Albufeira town on the Algarve coast of Portugal. This Vespa isn’t in great condition compared to the red scooter I found in Barcelona, but I though the background worked very well and it seemed crying out to have it’s photograph taken.
