Cutting a Coconut

Cutting a Coconut

Here we see a lady is cutting up a coconut, at the waters edge of a canal. I was in the Damnoen Saduak district of Thailand. A couple of hours drive west of Bangkok, it has miles of picturesque canals. The area is famous for its daily, floating markets. Sadly, this has become a busy and popular tourist attraction. As a result, the market has lost much of its authenticity. In many ways, as a tourist myself, I was fueling this. The organised tour I was on took us on a boat trip outside of the market. This was a fantastic way to see how people lived on and around these canals.

Boats in Krabi Bay

Boats in Krabi Bay

This is a long-tail boat in the Andaman Sea in Southern Thailand. Staying for a few days in the popular beach town of Ao Nang, I saw dozens of boats like this one. On the horizon you can see  some of the 130 islands in this region. Most of these islands are small, very rocky and covered in dense mangrove forests. As a result, only a few of the larger islands are populated.

Street Cooking on Ko San Road

One of the most crowded photo shoots I have ever been on. It was my last night in Bangkok. There was no way a tripod was going to work for me. After a few evenings of walking around without the camera and seeing how the area came alive at night, I wanted to attempt to capture it. It turned out much better than expect and was well worth the effort.

Barracudas Tour Boat Thailand

Barracudas Tour Boat Thailand

Although you can hire long boats like this with a guide privately it is much cheaper to go in a group. This boat transported myself and about thirty other tourists around a few of the small islands from Ao Nang beach near Krabi. You can see the driver at the back with our two guides posing for a photograph at the front of the boat.
