Cannon at Shieldaig, Scotland

Cannon at Shieldaig, Scotland

Shieldaig is a small village in Wester Ross in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland and home to around 100 people. Last summer we were driving through the area and parked by the loch side for a break. Sitting on a bench looking over the water I noticed this old cannon. According to Wikipedia this village was founded in 1800 with a view to training up seamen for war against Napoleon, so this cannon probably represents this history.

The Potting Shed Restaurant

The Potting Shed Restaurant

Welcome to the Potting Shed Cafe & Restaurant, in the Walled Garden of Applecross House. This is probably one of the best kept culinary secrets in the British Isles, found in the highlands of Scotland. It was started as a project to restore the near derelict walled garden and create some local employment in 2001 and was voted one of the top ten restaurants by the Independent newspaper. I ate there back in June 2008 and it was fantastic, the food is all local, vegetables and fruit straight from the garden, shellfish from their own boat and venison and lamb from the local hill!

Typical Scottish Highland Landscape

Typical Scottish Highland Landscape

We drove for miles down a single track road to find a beautiful loch in the middle of nowhere, but it was worth it in my eyes for the photograph above. On the way back the blue skies shone through the clouds and lit up this wonderful vista. I have very little idea where exactly this was other than in the Highlands of Scotland. I’m sure my Great Aunt Ann or Great Uncle Michael who were with me at the time could fill us in on some of the details in the comments below, but I had to share this image with you because of the way that the light worked so well in my favour.

Gardener Hoeing at Inverewe Gardens

Gardener Hoeing at Inverewe Gardens

So far my favourite garden in the highlands of Scotland, the world famous Inverewe Gardens are home to some very exotic plants due to its unique micro climate. Here we see one of the gardeners weeding away with his hoe. It is a very simple capture and the light is coming from the wrong direction in my opinion, but I though it was a nice capture of a man working the soil. You can see a wider view of this part of the garden below.
