Egglestone Abbey, Durham

Egglestone Abbey, County Durham

I find it extremely useful to research areas online before I visit and photograph them. Some of the best websites to do this are Wikipedia and Flickr. Flickr is great because of the vast numbers of people who upload pictures; this means you are bound to find photos of where you are going. Also, searching by “most interesting” often gives the best images in the search. When I researched for my trip up to County Durham and the Yorkshire Dales I didn’t come across Egglestone Abbey at all. But one of the photographers I was staying with showed me a few of his pictures of the abbey and I decided to go. Luckily I went on the right day’ because the weather was perfect with a great blue sky behind the abbey. I hope you enjoy this and next time you’re planning a trip or going travelling with your cameras, take half an hour to browse through Flickr and Wikipedia, I promise you will find interesting places to visit and photograph.

Romaldkirk Parish Church, Teesdale

Romaldkirk Parish Church, Teesdale

I think it is time I start blogging about somewhere other than the Yorkshire Dales and County Durham but I couldn’t finish talking about last weekends trip up north without showing you this photograph above. The village of Romaldkirk is where we were all staying. This picture was taken on the Sunday morning, in fact thinking about it there was probably a mass going on at the time. I feel disappointed that I didn’t go in and explore the interior when I had the chance because I do wish to try and take some stained glass photographs but I can’t do everything. The low viewpoint makes this photograph different in my opinion, it looks as if the camera was very close to the ground, but it was actually on a wall at my shoulder height. The graveyard and church are a lot higher than the road which goes around the church. The original photograph had made converging verticals which I corrected in Photoshop, but apart from this, the photograph is just how I saw it.

Hury Reservoir Channel, County Durham

Hury Reservoir Channel, County Durham

This is the third photograph I am publishing this week which I took last Sunday up in County Durham. There is a tendency to find that a lot of reservoirs look the same, which is true. There are five large reservoirs just a few miles west of Romaldkirk. The photograph above shows what appears to be an overflow channel from the nearby Blackton Reservoir and (as you can see in the photograph) it appears to take overflow water from the Hury Reservoir. Just the other side of black foot bridge is a 40 foot concrete slop down into a small river which (according to the map) eventually feeds into the River Tees down the road. It would be interesting to know where these five reservoirs provide drinking water too, I would guess most of the North East including Durham and Newscastle but I could be wrong. Still, I thought I would share this photograph with you as I have never seen a channel like this one at a reservoir before, if anyone has any additional information about what it is or does I would love to hear about it.

Happy horse in the evening light

Happy horse in the evening light

After a very long day of photography, I decided to go for a walk from Romaldkirk along Egglestone Lane to the River Tees. There was a nice evening light and I came across a field with a couple of horses in it. I have photographed animals before, and it is a difficult art. You have about 30 – 60 seconds when they are close to you that they are interested in you. After that they realise you have no food and walk away, I have found horses are the least patient animal to photograph, cows for example will give you a little longer and sheep even less. To get this picture above I walked along the wall till where the sun light would give a nice side / back light to the horse. The called the horse over, using burst mode I got about eight photos and this was the best one. I like to think he is smiling, he almost licked my camera lens at one point. Shame about not getting the top of the animals ears in the frame but with the limited time I did my best.
