The Pancake Rocks are a heavily eroded limestone area on the west coast of New Zealand’s south island. Part of the Paparoa National Park near Punakaiki. It is one of the more isolated places I have stayed and arrived here after a long drive from Christchurch. After finding a bed in a hostel right on the beach I wondered up to the rocks. They have made a nice walkway around the area. The above photograph was taken on my first explore but the best time to visit is at high tide. Then the sea bursts up through several vertical blowholes. Sadly, that evening wasn’t not only cloudy but the tide wasn’t quite high enough for much chance of blowhole photography.
