Milky way over Red Rocks

Astrophotography, otherwise known as star photography is something I had always wanted to try and New Zealand is a great place to star gaze. This is my first real attempt. My friend James (a very keen astrophotographer) and I went to an event called A Night of Astrophotography with Mark Gee. It is an annual event where world famous (and Wellington local) photographer Mark Gee gets a few hundred photographers to head down to Red Rocks Nature Reserve to point our cameras skyward. You can see the lights from torches on the beach in the lower third of this photograph. Above us was the milk way. Next winter I hope to do a lot more astrophotography.
