Maori food store

Nestled in the native plants in the Te Parapara Garden in Hamilton Gardens I came across this strange looking house. It is very small, too small for a person. It sits on two ornate wooden legs about four feet off the ground. After looking around for a sign I discovered that this is actually a storehouse for food. A few hundred years before European’s came to New Zealand, there were no mammals (aside from one small species of bat) and mainly birds living in the country. This store would have keep such ground dwelling creatures off the tribes food.
