Glenorchy is a small settlement to the northern end of Lake Wakatipu. It’s a picturesque 45 minute drive out of Queenstown in New Zealand’s South Island. The Red Shed was originally built for the New Zealand Railways Department as a goods shed for freight carried on the steamers up and down the lake. It was restored in 1999 after floods damaged the building. The shed is quite small but inside is a little museum showcasing the history of the area. This was the second time I’ve been to Glenorchy. Back in 2013 it was a very sleepy place. Whilst it’s still not anywhere near as busy as Queenstown. There has clearly been a lot of new building in the area. There was a lovely cafe which was well worth stopping at. Behind the shed is an old wooden jetty. Behind the lake are the Ailsa Mountain range.
