Waiotapu is an active geothermal area in New Zealand’s Taupo Volcanic Zone. There are many hot springs and boiling mud pools. Above is a wide angle view of the landscape around a few of the larger mud pools. A still photograph of the mud and steam doesn’t really do this powerful landscape justice. If it wasn’t for the forest in the background it would feel as if I was stood on the top of an active volcano, which in a way, I was!
