After visiting the Anderton Boat Lift a few weeks ago, I remembered wanting to see the Falkirk Wheel last year when I was up in Scotland. Sadly, I ran out of time but today I managed to make the journey west of Edinburgh, to see the Falkirk Wheel. It was much more impressive than the boat lift at Anderton in Northwich. This is probably due to the way the Falkirk Wheel works, it rotates with a boat at the top and boat at the bottom and swaps them around. This is the only boat lift in the world that rotates like this and is totally unique, as you can see in the photograph above. It was opened in 2002 and amazingly costs just £10 per day to power it, using physics and complex engineering it is possible to balance the two heavy weights. Taking under ten minutes to swap the two boats around. I didn’t go on the boat trip but enjoyed my day watching the boats go up and down.
