Edinburgh’s National Monument at Night

This was one of my most successful night shoots of last year, on top of Calton Hill in Edinburgh in December. This is by far my favourite area of the city for photography and as much as I had been many times before this was a first at night. Having had a previous photo of this monument judged in a competition, the feedback was that I was too close with a wide angle lens that caused a lot of distortion and made the photo look a fake. Remembering this and taking the advice on board, I climbed up a small wall to set the tripod up high and far away from the monument. I thought I had left it too late as the sky was completely black through my eyes, but through the cameras eye at an exposure time of 30 second this was the result. Happy New Year!
