As highway 6 skirts along the edge of Lake Wakatipu it comes to a section called the Devil’s Staircase. As the road winds, rises and falls in a very tortuous way between huge cliffs of rock and sheer drops down to the water. One of the tight bends has a lookout or viewpoint. Pulling in the car and crouching down on the wrong side of the Armco barrier, this was my view south. The lines of the rock in the foreground is what really caught my attention.
