Caves at Dovedale

These two huge caves are know as Dove Holes. As I walked along the river through Dovedale towards the village of Milldale it was hard to miss these openings on the right side of the path. These impressive caves are created by water eroding the soft limestone cliffs. It is difficult to give a sense of scale. I had taken a photograph of a person inside the cave to show just how big they are, but when I looked closely he had his eyes shut! They must be at least 20 feet high floor to ceiling at their largest part.
