Sunset on the Irish Sea

Sunset on the Irish Sea

This was taken on the sea front just north of Blackpool town centre. The sea is relatively calm. I had been watching a couple of night fishermen setting up their equipment and preparing for their evenings fishing. As the sun started to set the clouds started coming in and the sun turned them this beautiful orange tone. In my opinion the only thing missing from this photograph is a large yacht in full sail!

I only captured a few firework shots from the recent competition at Blackpool, but this shows something that a lot of people seem to like. Everyone thinks that the smoke would be a problem in an intense display like this where they don’t leave time for the smoke to clear (as it is a timed competition). However, stood at the right angle to the wind and fireworks the smoke should blow off to the side as we see here. The smoke blurs because the camera is set up to capture a long exposure time.

The more you show people photographs, the more comments you receive: good, bad or indifferent. After showing a couple of people the above photograph they seemed to love how the smoke looks, being blown away to the left. This is caused by the camera being set to a long exposure in order to capture the trails of light which the fireworks make. The first thing that catches my eye about this photograph is the tiny bits of blue at the ends of the light trails.

Blackpool Fireworks Competition 2010

After a portrait photo shoot in the afternoon a few of us stayed in Blackpool and waited around in the cold for nightfall. There was a reasonable sunset and we watched truck loads of fireworks being towed onto the beach. After a couple of hours wait this was the result. It was the final night of fireworks and it took place between South and Central Piers. Last time I was able to attend a competition was 2007 when they had the fireworks focused around North Pier.

Blackpool’s North Pier is the most traditional and in my opinion the nicest of the three piers, so this is where my photo shoot focused on. I was actually there to get some portraits of a young family, but I also captured another couple of images at the same time. The girls had two enjoyable rides on this carousel or Merry-go-Round. I thought a close up detail of one of the horses heads might make for a photograph worth sharing.
