On the south bank of Ōtākaro / Avon River is this huge memorial to the Canterbury Earthquake in 2011. It was designed by architect Grega Vezjak and opened to the public in February 2017. It is a curved 112 metre long wall of 517 marble panels. The names of the 185 people who lost their lives are engraved in the stone. Written in both English and the deceased’s first language. It is a powerful memorial in a lovely park setting by the river. I chose to photograph the detail of the stone and engraving detail, rather than try to capture a much wider view. Maybe next time I’m in Christchurch I can try a wide view from the other side of the river.
