This is one of my favourite photographs from a recent stock photography shoot, it was art directed by one of the owners of the shop. It was her idea to use the cake, with the intention of using it for magazine advertising. The slogan is “girls…you can have your cake and eat it!” I hope to do more close-up and product / table top photography in the coming months. Jewellery is notoriously difficult so the other subjects I have in mind shouldn’t be as tough going.

The idea came from one of the owners of the shop for their website. Overall I’m very pleased with how this shot came out, especially as it was taken on an 18-200mm zoom lens (most people would use a more specialist macro lens for this type of image).

This was a product photograph I took for a local jewellery shop. It is one of the most unusual necklaces I have ever seen. It was about two inches across and features five 18ct gold rings topped with diamonds. I thought that the red silk background really helped the diamonds to stand out. It would probably have looked better around the neck of a beautiful model, but this was product photography and not fashion photography!

Obviously yesterday’s Rose Gold ring was a product photograph for a client and I showed it to you as an idea of what can be done with macro photography and the right lighting. However, the client didn’t want clean white backgrounds, they wanted something striking and unique to their brand. The above photo was their favourite out of the three days I have spent shooting for them. This necklace is one of the most original pieces I have every seen, the “black” Opal stone is the size of a large stamp and I felt that the roses contrasted well with the blues of the stone.
