The small round dots in the shadowed area on the left side of the square are tables for people to enjoy a coffee around. It is definitely another place I want to revisit sometime in the future and some of the best views of the city can be seen from this point.

I have recently been going through some of my first digital photographs and the above was taken on a short trip to Venice. It may not be a traditional Venetian sight, but there was a large Jewish community in this small area of Venice that we walked through and the memorial pictured above really touched me at the time. There will be less morbid images of the city of Venice to come in the next few days.

One of the most famous sights and certainly the most famous bridge in Venice is the Rialto Bridge over the Grand Canal. It was completed in 1591 but there has been a dry crossing of the canal here since 1181. It is sad to see the graffiti on the bridge but I am pleased to have captured a gondola coming towards the camera.

I took this photograph back in April 2004 (four years ago – seems much longer) using my dads Canaon EOS 300D camera. Recently I have been going through my first attempts with a digital camera in an effort to update the blog pre July 2005. The above photograph is now the fifth image in the new Venice subject on this website.

I had obviously read and seen a lot of information about Venice before I went but it wasn’t until flying home that I saw this, the Lido. It is an 11 mile long sandbar which is (according to my grand parents) where a lot of Venetians go for their summer holidays, or at least that was traditionally where they went. Ariel photography has always been something of interest too me even though I rarely get the opportunity to take pictures from a plane.

This photograph was taken on a holiday with my grandparents and whilst on the trip I wrote a small diary, below follows what I wrote for this day…

We got up early to pack our bags and check out of the hotel. We left by half eight and needed to be at the airport for around half nine. The original plan was to get a public bus as we had done coming into Venice but instead we got a taxi (note, not an expensive water taxi, it was a normal taxi).

We took of from Venice at just after midday and as the weather was so great I got some nice ariel photographs through the planes window both of the Venetian lagoon and of Cheshire and Cheadle when landing back in Manchester.
