York Train Station might not be the first place you think of for great photography, but I took this picture whilst working on a commission from a glazing company (something that is still on going). Friends and family were pleased to see the job come through for me, but questioned why it took so long to get the photos. “Surely you can just Photoshop in a blue sky through the glass?”. Well no, because glass is ultimately reflective, but at the same time opaque, so getting it to look realistic would take hours and hours per photograph. This is not “Photoshopped” in apart from resizing for the web and you can see how natural the glass roofing looks.

The first time I saw this huge water sculpture / fountain I knew it had to be photographed and this is my first attempt. The reason I went was to capture some photos of the station for a client, but I ended up having to go to Sheffield twice recently. A week or two ago (my second visit) rewarded me with the blue skies I needed and when I had half an hour to kill after my official business I came outside to see what the best angle would be to capture this fountain. I believe that dusk / sunset / night time would be the best time to get a good photo of this, so for a first attempt I am happy to share this with you, but there are plans to re-take this at a better angle and time of day.

The above photo shows a First train waiting to depart from Hull train station. I liked the way the “welcome” sign in the background works with the from of this modern train. You might be asking why I would post this photo as it isn’t one of my usual subjects that I photograph regularly. Well, I publish my favourite pictures on this site to promote myself, but there are literally thousands of photos that you won’t see that I take on commercial photographic shoots. As I am starting to do more and more paid photography, I am learning more about how to use the camera to not only take good photos for myself but also for others. The above picture probably won’t be used by the client, but I liked it enough to capture it and so thought it was worth sharing.

Since posting various photographs of this area of the Yorkshire Dales, the website has received a number of comments and feedback. The above photograph is taken looking to the west from the road through the valley. The previously published image below shows the view looking east from exactly the same spot on the road. It is certainly an area I would like to revisit. I can just see a lovely panoramic photograph that I could take which would include both views. That would be magical, but for now we have these two images of the most beautiful part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
