This is a strange but intriguing piece of public art in the Southwark area near Tower Bridge on the banks of the River Thames in London. I really like this tree, on first impressions I thought it to be very bizarre and took a couple of quick snaps to laugh at it later. Now looking at it a couple of years later, I see it in a totally different way and think it very creative and unique. The sculpture is called “Evergreen” and is by David Batchelor. It was made of plastic and metal and was contributed to the More London development by John Randolph Davies.

Canary Wharf reminds me a little of New York, in that when you’re there for the first time you spend about ten minutes looking upwards until your neck starts to hurt a little! At least that was my experience of the place. It wasn’t a great day in terms of sky or lighting but it was taken at dusk meaning you can see more of the lights in the windows of the buildings. Here I used a touch of flash to light up the Underground Sign in the foreground.

This was one of the first photos I took with my Sigma 10-20mm super wide angle lens a couple of years ago. It shows the modern amphitheatre outside London’s City Hall on the South Bank of the River Thames. This modern area is on the other side of the river from the Tower of London. I presume that the half-built building in the background has now been completed and I look forward to returning there (hopefully this year if finances allow).

The original image is really awful but I felt that I had a good composition with the sign placed in the right area of the frame. It was such flat, horrible lighting at the time with a very overcast grey day. With some digital post processing in Lightroom and Photoshop I chose to turn the image black and white (as there was so little colour to start with) and increased the details within the shadows to create what you see above.
