Dugald Stewart Monument at Dusk

The Dugald Stewart Monument is situated on top of Calton Hill, overlooking Edinburgh city centre and the above photo represents one of my best attempts at the “painting with light” technique. Let me explain, this image was a 30 second exposure time. Obviously to keep sharpness the camera was on a heavy tripod. Whilst the shutter was open capturing the light, I used a hand held flash gun to fire light into the monument at various different angles. Half a dozen full power bursts gave an even and dare I say natural-ish looking light on the subject. The blue sky is a bonus, resulting from the prolonged exposure time.
