Bob throwing a Football Boot

Bob has been doing a project on racism and violence in sports. As part of this idea he approached me to take the photographs of him. The above image shows an idea I had to create something a little more dynamic. When photographing people I am quickly learning that if they can be doing something (like throwing a football boot in the air) they are focused on what they are doing and not on what I am doing. Portrait photography has to be quick, and so this shoot took two attempts to captured the boot in the correct position.

As I practice more and more people photography I learn new tricks and ways to make people relax. The throwing something trick works well, but there is no eye contact with the camera. In the coming months I will be sharing more and more tricks with you about how to get people to relax when you’re taking their photograph. Putting them into practice is something new to me and hopefully an area of photography I can quickly become more experienced with.
