Bob with Bloody Cricket Bat

I spent most of yesterday helping my friend Bob, taking some photographs of him with a few different props in the studio. We used a black background and one light to create this angry looking portrait. He had a cheap cricket bat and some very good fake blood with him, so we experimented and this was my favorite photo of the shoot. Bob modeled to make things a little simpler and we now both have a small set of portraits to use. I will put this and another one or two of him on this site and he will use them in his latest project. Everyone’s a winner.
The most difficult part of this set up was to get as little light on the background as possible, and not a lot of light on the face or hair. Also we found that the surface of the cricket bat was extremely reflective to the studio flash lighting, which is why it is at a funny angle. Just before you comment that if he had hit somebody with a cricket bat as the blood suggests it, the splatter would be the other way around – we realised and it doesn’t matter. It was an experiment and for our uses, it worked and Bob and I are happy with the results.

The Leaning Tower of Paris
about 2 years ago - 1 comment
The Eiffel Tower is certainly the symbol of Paris if not one of the most famous structures in France. This was again taken back in 2005 but hadn’t been published on here until now. At the time Paris was bidding for the 2012 Olympic Games. A couple of weeks after this was taken it was…
Mallard Duck on Ice
about 2 years ago - 1 comment
Above we see a female mallard duck struggling to stand up on a frozen pond at Dunham Massey. The ice was above two to three inches thick, although the park staff had broken up parts of the ice for the creatures. Below you can see a male mallard duck having very similar standing issues on…
Great Northern Tower, Manchester

Standing at Gmex Metrolink Station one afternoon waiting for a tram, I noticed the dark, stormy looking sky and how the buildings in the foreground were lit up by the sun coming through the thick clouds over my shoulder. The Hilton / Beetham Tower was too large and close but the Great Northern Tower really…
Signing the Wedding Register
about 3 years ago - No comments
Here we see the groom, Dean, signing the wedding register at his wedding back in September. I used natural sun light coming through the wonderful stained glass window over his left shoulder. Before the wedding I had asked the priest when was and wasn’t appropriate to use flash photography. Although he said that it was…
Self Portrait Reflection in Glass

As much as I don’t enjoy seeing my own image, I thought that this was interesting enough for today’s photo. Here I am stood on the decking of one of the large piers in Barcelona Harbour. The building had an angled glass wall that distorted the straight edges of the wood. As you can see…
Lego Man on his Bike
about 3 years ago - No comments
As a child I spent a long time collecting, building and playing with my legos. The design of the bricks and in particular the lego people are fantastic in my opinion. Which is why when I got my lego boxes out a few months ago to take some still life photography, I took a couple…
Dean & Belinda’s Wedding Portrait
about 3 years ago - No comments
I couldn’t publish yesterday’s photo of the church interior without showing you a more formal photo of the bride and groom. This was taken at the reception and shows Belinda sat on a swing outside. Before the speeches and cutting of the cake I had noticed this swing in the gardens, but the sun was…
Michaela at dusk
about 3 years ago - No comments
Whilst walking around Salford Quays taking photos, the sun was just about to set behind the clouds and I thought it would be a nice light for a portrait. So Michaela stepped in. Rather than getting her to look straight into the camera I thought it would make her much more relaxed to look towards…
Lego Medical Man

Still life, close up / macro photography has been something of a summer project for me. Rarely have I had the chance to use my newly acquired second-hand close up filter on the front of my Nikor 50mm f/1.8 lens but last week I was lucky enough to spend the whole day playing with Lego.…
Piccadilly Circus Neon Signs
about 3 years ago - No comments
The neon signs at Piccadilly Circus has been one of the classic night views of London that I have really been looking forward to photographing. Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square are huge entertainment areas of London (full of cinemas, casinos and restaurants). Obviously the above photograph was taken with my camera on a tripod. I…
